It Keeps Getting Better!

As usual, today has been a wonderful day! I will spell it all out for you. However, I must tell you that I am currently watching Braves baseball on ESPN in Espanol. It is rather interesting watching the Braves in Spanish. So, if random words appear during my post that is why.

So, this morning started out with our morning exercise routine. No, we didn’t do exercises, but heard the lady lead them over the intercom from the elementary school. Then came breakfast. Queta and Julio spent almost all day yesterday in Leon and didn’t return until late at night, so Queta’s mom came up here from Salamanca (1.5 hours away) to watch all of us and ensure that we had food. She’s the typical Mexican grandmother, always cooking for and spoiling the kids. She called us “mis reyes” or “my kings.” That’s not too untypical of a pet name … Paula is “mi reina” or “my queen.” But anyway, I had a nice breakfast of a quesadilla with turkey ham. It was an interesting flavor, but very tolerable. After that, we headed to school.

Darn! They just lost in extra innings!

Grammar was really fun today! We spent the first hour practicing the subjunctive tense. By the way, this us the 100th time that I have reviewed the subjunctive. Anyway, after the break we played a game similar to charades. Actually, it was more like a mixture of Pictonary and charades. But, when it was my turn, we got no points at all. Let’s just say that I can’t draw work a flip. After that fun game, we had cake! Two people in our class had birthdays, so Alma (our program director) brought cake for the entire class. The catch was that the two birthday people had their faces pushed into the cake by Alma herself. We then had our literature class, which was spent discussing the poems of the Poet King. His name started with an N and I can’t even begin to pronounce it.

After school, we headed back to the house for lunch. Then, we rested before heading back out. We went down into the center of the city and discovered a new plaza. It’s called Plaza San Fernando and it is huge and quiet. Finding a quiet place in this town is a feat. However, San Fernando seems just about perfect. There are tons of cafes all around and even a nice little French place. The odd thing about the French place is that it is a buffet and it is cheap. They sell food by the kilo. After making this awesome discovery, we met up with a friend and walked a little bit around. We went to a bakery where we went absolutely crazy. We got a whole tray full of baked goods … easily 3 pounds worth. And the price? 30 pesos! That’s slightly less than 3 dollars!! I love this town.

And, finally, we can’t come back to the house before stopping at a café. We went to Café Santo, which is this awesome café that is on a little bridge over a street. It’s for sure the coolest café in the city. I had a lemonade (Mexican style with mineral water) and a crepe with cajeta. Cajeta, for those of you who do not know, is caramel that is made from goat’s milk. It was awesome! I got a crepe and lemonade, Lance got a crepe and pineapple juice, and we only spent $8 in total!

So, the moral of this story: come to Mexico and eat amazing food for pennies … literally.

Tomorrow, we are off to Teotihuacan which is one of the most amazing sets of indigenous ruins left in Mexico. We have to be at the Jardin Cantador at 5:30 in the morning! The bus leaves at 5:40, with or without us. Teotihuacan is located in the State of Mexico, just to the west of Mexico City, so it will be a rather long day trip. But, I’m looking forward to it! Yay!!
